Commonly
Treated Conditions
The most common conditions treated by a pedorthist include:
- Plantar Fasciitis (pain in heel or arch) - Patients
suffer from exquisite pain at the heel or along the arch of the foot, especially first
thing in the morning. Plantar fasciitis is a common (and often chronic) overuse condition.
It requires a controlling orthosis to maintain foot position and reduce tension on the
injured tissue.
- Metatarsalgia (pain in the joint of the ball of the
foot)- Patients with metatarsalgia describe a persisting pain in the ball of the foot that
feels like "walking with a pebble in your shoe". It can also be accompanied by
burning, tingling or numbness into the forefoot and toes. Pedorthist commonly treat
metatarsalgia with two devices: an orthosis contoured to unload painful areas, and a
rocker sole to reduce painful toe extention.
- Diabetes - Diabetics have decrease blood
circulation and loss of sensation in their feet, which makes them high-risk patients.
Diabetics are particularly susceptible to skin breakdown and ulceration, so it is critical
that they have optimal-fitting footwear and accommodative orthoses.
- Arthritis- Activities such as standing and
walking aggravate the continual pain and degeneration of the joint caused by arthritis.
Patients benefit tremendously from additional-depth footwear and footwear modification
that align, cushion, and stabilize feet.
- Pronation/Supination control
- Pes Planus (flat feet)
- Pes Cavus (high arches)
It is important to note that Pedorthists do not diagnose conditions- that is the
responsibility of the physicians. Pedorthists, like pharmacists, fill a prescription
written by a medical doctor whom have assessed, diagnosed and decided on a treatment plan.
Pedorthists have been trained to manufacture and modify both footwear and orthoses.
Since pedorthists address the lower extremity as a system, they have a unique
understanding of how the properly fit orthotics, good footwear and appropriate shoe
modifications work together to address the issues of the patient. The result is a
biomechanically correct support system that addresses the
patient's foot conditions, without need for surgery.
To treat these conditions, Steenwyk Custom Shoes & Orthotics can modify existing
footwear, provide retail footwear, manufacture Custom Footwear,
or create Foot Orthotics and other devices. Our pedorthists can
design footwear and orthoses to treat many biomechanical conditions, including those
caused by neurological and systemic disorders. Well designed orthoses or appropriate
footwear can provide relief from many painful or debilitating conditions of the legs and
feet.
