Measuring Procedures

We require the following information:

1. Foot tracings (Podotracks or Pedigraphs)
2. Manual Foot measurements
3. S.T.S. casting sock cast (ideal for abnormal foot conditions)
            See Casting Procedures for more information on STS socks

Remember: The more information we recieve, the more accurately we can make the shoes.

Measuring tools and materials:

Podotrack/ Pedigraph
Tracing stick
Measuring tape
Pen or marker

Working with the Podotrack/ Pedigraph

1. Remove the protective layer from the back of the transparent plastic foil.
(The protective layer is notched of the front.)

2. Remove the protective layer

3. Place the foil on the DLA colorant carrier (carbon paper). Be careful do not smooth with your hands!

4. Lift the foot up and allow the patient to stand on the Podortrack. Let the patient stand normally.

5. Trace the foot by holding the tracing stick at a 90 degree angle.

6. Remove the transparent foil immediately from the DLA colorant carrier (carbon paper)

7. Remove the DLA colorant carrier along the perforated edges.

8. Smooth transparent foil onto the bottom white grid paper.

9. The detailed print has been made.                

10. Place the foot back on the Podotrack.

11. The ball circumference measurement is taken across the 5th MTJ to the 1st MTJ.

12. We recommend to mark on the Podotrack the location of all measurements.

13. The waist circumference measurement is taken behind 5th MTJ and 1st MTJ.

14. The span circumference measurement is taken across the  base of the 5th MTJ and the 1st Cuneiform.

15. The instep circumference measurement is taken from the back of the heel to the front of the subtalar joint.

16. The leg circumference measurement is taken 3 cm above the lateral ankle joint.

17. Mark how high any other leg measurements are taken. We recommend every 5cm to desired boot height.

  18. Mark the height of hammer or claw toes.
